The Radiation Protection & Diagnostic
Imaging Physics Service is part of the Radiation Physics Department of
Hull & East Yorkshire Hospitals, and provides advice and training on the
safe use of ionising (e.g. x-rays, gamma rays) and non-ionising (e.g.
laser, UV) radiation, principally in the healthcare environment.
Our team of physicists and technologists, led by a consultant clinical
scientist, provide scientific and technical support, and legislative
guidance in the fields of
- Diagnostic radiology
- Nuclear medicine imaging and
therapy
- Radiotherapy – external beam and
brachytherapy
- Fluoroscopic guided interventional
cardiology and radiology
- Dental radiology
- Surgical and therapeutic laser
treatments
- Veterinary radiology
as well as
- liaising with inspecting bodies
(Health & Safety Executive, Environment Agency, etc.)
- radioactive waste management
- calibration of monitoring
equipment
- annual performance survey of all
radiological equipment
- commissioning of all new or
replacement radiological equipment
- scientific support for patient
dosimetry projects
- first line maintenance and image
quality service on all community dental installations
- research and development of
digital imaging
- scientific support to emergency
services (NAIR scheme) and Public Health Service in the event of a
radiological incident.
The Service is currently based at the
Princess Royal Hospital, Hull, UK, but serves customers from South
Yorkshire to Tyneside.
