Core of Knowledge Course in Lasers
The Medical Devices Agency have recommended that all users of
therapeutic medical laser (class 3B or 4) should receive a Core of
Knowledge in relation to laser safety, as well as relevant medical
training.
The British Medical Laser Association has produced a video which
provides this Core of Knowledge.
A copy of this video can be borrowed, by clients of HEY Radiation
Protection Service, from John Saunderson, Radiation Physics
Department, the Princess Royal Hospital (01482 676690,
john.saunderson@hey.nhs.uk),
or purchased from the
University of Dundee for £80. The video contains the following;

Alternatively, day or half day courses are held throughout the
country. Click here for contact details for UK courses available in
2003. Details can be found at the Institute of Physics and
Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) web site (although this was not up to
date last time I looked).
For those assisting with laser procedures (nurses, ODA's, etc.) or
those wishing a shorter refresher,or overview of laser safety
issues, a 1-1.5 hour in-house training session in the Safe Use of
Lasers can be given, to groups of half a dozen or more staff, at a
time and venue to suit all. See Training page for details.
